AES-1 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain test

P. aeruginosa  (Australian epidemic strain I: AES-1) is an extremely virulent form of the bacterium associated with increased morbidity and mortality.

Australian researchers have identified a unique locus on the AES-1 strain that is not present in any other P.aeruginosa isolates tested. This unique AES-1 locus has been used to develop the AES-1 Test: diagnostic real-time PCR assays, which enable rapid identification of CF individuals carrying the AES-1 strain.

The test can be carried out directly from sputum samples with results within hours. Current culture and PAGE methods can take days to perform. 

This quick, accurate and inexpensive test will enhance clinic surveillance and quarantine measures. Early detection and treatment can reduce the severity of the infection and its associated morbidity and mortality rates.
